West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski has admitted in an interview that European side Benfica approached him in 2019 about joining the club.
Speaking to Polish outlet Meczyki, the 36-year-old shot-stopper revealed that the UEFA Champions League giants contacted him two years ago over a potential transfer. However, Fabianski sent Benfica’s representatives to his agent, who shot the deal down.
In the words of Fabianski, the £65k-a-week Premier League star had no interest in leaving England nor the West Ham project. The Polish keeper has been a key member of David Moyes’ squad as the east London side continue to rise in English football.
Indeed, the Irons have won all three of their opening UEFA Europa League group stage matches. Moreover, the Hammers currently find themselves fourth in the Premier League. And for Fabianski, he had no interest in leaving this project behind in 2019.
Fabianski said when asked about Benfica approaching him: “Yes, it’s true. This was after my first season at West Ham. People from Benfica contacted me directly and said they were interested in me.”
The 36-year-old Pole added: “They wanted to talk about the details, so I redirected them to my agent. He was already in further talks, but to be honest I did not take this proposal seriously.”
Fabianski made right call rejecting Benfica for Moyes project

It would be an understatement to say that Fabianski made the correct decision in 2019 deciding to reject a move to Portugal to stay and work with Moyes in taking West Ham to the next level.
Indeed, whilst Benfica are in the Champions League this season and already managed a historic result over FC Barcelona, there’s no denying that West Ham under Moyes are in the midst of something special.
And with the club in Europe and challenging for top-four, Fabianski made the right call staying in east London.
