Speaking on the Wrighty’s House Podcast, Ian Wright has been discussing Callum Wilson and his potential place at the World Cup.
The Newcastle striker has been at the centre of a great debate over the past few weeks as fans and pundits alike try to figure out which strikers England will, and should, take to the World Cup.
Wilson has been at the forefront of that conversation, but sadly, Wright believes that the former Bournemouth ace won’t be going to Qatar.
Indeed, the pundit claims that if the World Cup was in the summer, Wilson would be almost certain to be going, but he thinks that the tournament is coming just too soon for the attacker.

Wilson won’t go
Wright spoke about the striker.
“It’s the margins, you win on the margins and I would bring Ivan Toney. Callum Wilson, I go with you, if it was the summer he’d be locked in, but we need someone whose mindset is coming off the bench and knowing what he’s going on there to do. Tammy will have that, Ivan Toney will know what he’s there for,” Wright said.
Should still go
Yes, Wilson would probably have a better chance of going to the World Cup if it was in the summer and he could prove his fitness and form over a longer period of time, but, in our view, he should still be going to Qatar.
Wilson is a world-class finisher, and if England come unstuck and are chasing a goal in a knockout game, he’s exactly the type of player they will need.
Let’s be honest, the backup strikers who are going are going to be sparsely used behind Harry Kane, but as a natural-born finisher, Wilson is perhaps the most reliable impact player off the bench.
Gareth Southgate should seriously think about picking the Newcastle ace.
