Jamie Carragher has claimed that for the ‘first time’ this season he now thinks Liverpool will pip Manchester City to the Premier League title, as he told Sky Sports Football.
Liverpool recorded a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates on Wednesday night to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table to just one point.
If Jurgen Klopp and his players win their remaining nine Premier League games of the season, then they will be crowned champions.
Of course, that includes their trip to Manchester City next month, which is set to be a mouthwatering encounter.
Nonetheless, this is what Carragher said about the Premier League title race, moments after the full-time whistle had blown at the Emirates.
“I think it’s absolutely massive,” said Carragher. “I think everyone connected with Liverpool football club now believes they will go on and win the Premier League title.
“It’s the first time I have ever thought that throughout the season. I thought Man City would. But I just think the momentum that they have. And the game that they have next, they could go to the top of the Premier League.
“You see the reaction of the players. The supporters. Man City are still in great form. But they are dropping points. I just think that there’s a real belief. I think everyone in that away end thinks they are going to win the league.”
The fact that Klopp could afford to keep Mohamed Salah on the bench because of a recent injury he picked up, before bringing him on in the second half, says a lot of the firepower he can work with.
Roberto Firmino, who has hardly played of late due to injury, even came off the bench to remind all that he is still capable of providing those killer moments for his side.
And he did just that when he ghosted past Arsenal’s backline to score a typical poacher-like finish inside the penalty area.
For the Reds now, they are in FA Cup action, with a classic away clash at Championship side, Nottingham Forest coming up at the weekend.
