Newcastle United are reportedly in advanced talks to hire a new director of football at St James’s Park.

According to Super Deporte, Newcastle are potentially set to hire a one-time Barcelona technical secretary in the form of Ramon Planes.

With the Magpies’ new ownership boasting billions, the Tyneside club is going to need a respected and experienced figure to oversee a massive overhaul of players in the North East.

And at the moment, Planes is looking like a very strong candidate to find himself appointed.

Here is how some Newcastle fans reacted to the speculation on Twitter:

The reluctance is understandable.

Because right now, Barcelona are an absolute mess on and off the field, hence why Planes terminated his agreement with the Spanish colossus.

Competition

Newcastle, though, have some stiff competition in the form of Paris Saint-Germain.

The same report claimed that the big-spending Ligue 1 giants are also hunting Planes but, really, that only makes it so much more of a coup if the English Premier League side can complete a deal.

Honestly, they need a sporting director as soon as possible.

Eddie Howe’s side are rock bottom of the Premier League table and failing to beat Burnley at St James’s Park this afternoon would be an absolute travesty.

Newcastle’s last two home games were against fellow-relegation candidates, like Norwich and Brentford.

But Howe’s outfit could only muster a draw on both occasions, meaning that this one against Sean Dyche’s troops is absolutely enormous.
