Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the club announced that Elliott Dickman had been appointed Lead Player Development Coach.

What’s the story?

Well, Newcastle have raided their bitter rivals Sunderland in hiring Dickman, who arrives to help those in the Under-23 side.

The 43-year-old has previously helped to develop the likes of Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford, so he boasts a fine track record.

After arriving at the Little Benton Academy, Dickman will take charge of the Under-23 side for the first time against Norwich U23 on Friday evening.

It’s may not be the manager or Director of Football that the Toon Army were hoping for, although it’s a fantastic appointment nonetheless.

Dickman seems to have a real talent when it comes to helping prospects fulfil their potential.

Hopefully, he will be able to bring more gems like Sean Longstaff into the first-team on Tyneside.

Raiding Dickman from the Stadium of Light is a fine way for the Magpies to kick off their new era under the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

The Player Development Coach did some excellent work for the Black Cats, and it’s people like him who play a key role behind the scenes.

Yes, a manager and DOF would be nice, although appointments of this ilk help to build foundations at a football club.

PIF and Amanda Staveley effectively have a bottomless pit of money to work with.

However, people like Dickman will make Newcastle a sustainable club, rather than one who spends silly money on short-term options before it all ends in tears.

For now, let’s see what the Newcastle fans on Twitter have been saying about the club’s announcement
