Nigel De Jong has suggested to ITV Sport that he finds is ‘so strange’ to hear what is being said about Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane after England’s opener.
There has been some suggestion that Kane could be dropped by England, such is the wealth of their attacking options.
The Tottenham striker was off colour against Croatia in the opener, where he drew a blank in England’s 1-0 victory.
But De Jong simply cannot believe that there is talk that Kane should be dropped.
“It’s so strange to see the rumours about Kane being droppable, I mean, if he scores two against Scotland he’ll be the national hero,” De Jong said.
Sky Sports ran an article questioning whether Kane had become a problem for England, which was heavily questioned by Tottenham fans.
Kane to silence the doubters?
It all does seem a little premature to be putting a striker who has just enjoyed arguably the best season of his career under so much pressure.
Granted, Kane hasn’t looked in top notch form in England’s build-up games or in the opener, but he may well be the finest striker in the tournament.
Kane also won the Golden Boot at the last World Cup, which should buy him some patience.
If Kane was to be replaced Dominic Calvert-Lewin looks the most likely man to replace him up-front, but any talk of Gareth Southgate making such a huge call seems massively premature.
