Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missed a big chance to send a message to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta last night.
Four days after being left out of the North London win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium for being late, Aubameyang was back in the first XI for the Europa League visit of Olympiacos.
The Gunners had a 3-1 first-leg lead but Arteta’s side lost 1-0 on the night.
It could and probably should’ve been a lot easier for Arsenal last night – and would’ve been if Aubameyang brought his shooting boots.
But the Gabon international missed a number of gilt-edged opportunities as the Emirates Stadium side limped into the quarter-final of the competition.
And former Arsenal hitman Kevin Campbell claims that his performance was a sad spectacle to see.
He told The Highbury Squad: “We know what’s up with Aubameyang – his nose is out of joint. He’s the captain, lead. Do your thing – this is why you’re captain. This season we’ve seen him have terrible days in front of goal. And it’s sad. It’s sad to see.”
Last night was symbolic of Aubameyang’s entire season, it must be said.
Yes, he’s a world-class striker on his day, but 14 goals in 30 games across all competitions this season illustrates a player who’s nowhere near as lethal as he was prior to signing the new contract in August.
