Chris Sutton labelled claims on BBC Radio 5 Live that Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is outdated as ‘ridiculous’.
Journalist Rory Smith stated on the radio station that the man in Tottenham’s dugout no longer has the ‘cutting edge’ of the new wave of managers coming through the doors.
Whilst it’s still early days at Spurs, things are going well for Mourinho in North London – they are still in the League Cup and they are sitting second in the Premier League table.
Nonetheless, Sutton first responded to the claims about Mourinho is his typically forthright manner.
“It’s a hell of a statement to make and for all what he’s done in the game, it’s insulting, isn’t I?!” said Sutton. “To call him outdated, at this moment in time? Has he not proven that he’s been adaptable over the years? Or are you just saying he’s a one-trick pony?”
Rory Smith responded by saying: “Absolutely not saying that, Chris. He has proven to be adaptable over the years. He is still a really good manager. I just don’t think he has the cutting edge anymore. I just don’t. I think the nature of the game has changed and Mourinho is still a talented football manager, but he’s not at the cutting edge of the way football is developing.”

The New York Times journalist then gave examples of how the new wave of managers are coming from Germany, with the likes of Bayern’s new coach as a case in point, but Sutton wasn’t having any of it.
Sutton added: “I don’t think he’s outdated. Absolutely not. I think it’s a ridiculous statement to make. I think he wants to play winning football and that’s what good managers do.”

At the end of the day, Mourinho’s main job is to put a trophy or trophies in Tottenham’s cabinet, and if he does that, then he will be lauded.
History suggests that he will do it because he has lifted a trophy at every club he has been at, but this feat might just be his best yet if he pulls it off.
Whilst some are tipping Spurs for the Premier League during these crazy circumstances, it could be argued that Tottenham’s best chance is, of course, the League Cup, but also the Europa League given Mourinho’s ability to grind out results.
