Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing Liverpool and their widely-reported interest in Jude Bellingham.

The Reds are reportedly very keen on the England midfielder as they look to revamp their squad next summer and according to Carragher, this would be a perfect signing.

Bellingham would fetch massive money if Dortmund were to sell him, but Carragher is of the opinion that, much like Virgil van Dijk, this transfer will look like a bargain in a few years’ time.

Bellingham a bargain

Carragher gave his verdict on Bellingham and the idea of getting him to Liverpool.

“Yeah, he looks the perfect fit and it would be a lot of money and when Liverpool have spent a lot of money it has been on the goalkeeper and Virgil van Dijk at great age profiles,” Carragher said.

“If you buy Jude Bellingham it would look really expensive, but it’s one of those transfers where you’d look back at it in two years’ time and think ‘that was a bargain’ the way Liverpool fans do now with Virgil van Dijk because you’re going to have him for a long time. He’s 19/20, you’ll get six or seven years and then maybe go to one of the Spanish giants. I think he’d be perfect for anyone, not just Liverpool.”

Could go either way

Bellingham undoubtedly looks like a massive talent, but there’s no such thing as a sure-thing in football.

Many would’ve said the same thing about Jadon Sancho a couple of years ago when he was shining in the Bundesliga as a teenager, but look at how his Manchester United career has panned out to date. He’s well and truly out of the England reckoning right now and he can’t buy a goal for the Red Devils.

There’s no saying that Bellingham wouldn’t go the same way. Meanwhile van Dijk was proven at Premier League level, so was a much safer bet.

Bellingham could end up being the signing of the decade for whoever lands him, but he could just as easily be another one of the Bundesliga’s big-money busts – let’s not forget, Naby Keita looked like a world-beater over in Germany at one point, and he’s not exactly been a star for Liverpool.

Liverpool should be in this race, but they shouldn’t put all of their eggs in one basket and hang their hopes on Bellingham completely reinvigorating this midfield.
