Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after Steve Bruce spoke to the media ahead of Newcastle’s clash against Leeds tomorrow.
What’s the story?
Well, some supporters seem to think Bruce has just suggested a takeover will happen, at some point.
The 56-year-old said: “I will, with my experience, hope that I can keep the club just ticking along, and make sure that the club stays where it is.”
Now, it’s pretty depressing to hear him accept such mediocrity, but we can understand what the Newcastle fans are talking about.
In our view, it seems as if Bruce is basically saying he’s been tasked with keeping the club’s head above water until a change of ownership happens.
Effectively, Mike Ashley isn’t going to invest more money in an asset he wants to sell, but that asset may not be sellable if it’s relegated to the Championship.
Ashley is clearly after a manager to just do the bare minimum on a shoestring budget – regular 17th places would do him just fine until a takeover happens.
Steve Bruce comments are awful for Newcastle
It must’ve been soul-crushing for Newcastle fans to hear Bruce say this earlier today.
It was obvious this was the mentality, but to hear him actually come out and say it was very, very surprising.
Aside from supporters, what must the players think of these comments?
Especially Joe Willock, who is probably wondering what he’s signed the next six years of his life up to.
Hopefully, the Magpies aren’t in this situation by the time that contract reaches its third year, let alone the final year.
