Shay Given has claimed that Dan James’ red-card tackle during Leeds United’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea was ‘madness’, as he told Premier League Productions (11/05/22 at 10:50 pm).

For the second game running, Leeds had a man sent off, as ex-goalkeeper Given questioned what Jesse Marsch is telling his players.

11 v 11, Leeds find it difficult as it is because their defence has been all over the place this season.

But during their last two matches, there’s no doubt that they have shot themselves in the foot.

Given labelled James’ tackle on Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic as ‘horrendous’, as the Whites still sit in the danger zone.

“I don’t know what you can say,” said Given. “There is no defence, whatsoever for that tackle.

“It’s just madness. On the back of Ayling getting sent off at the weekend, I don’t know what the manager is saying to them before the game.

“But that is a horrendous challenge. And the referee was left with no option but to send him off.”

More yellow cards than anyone else for Leeds

With two games of the 2021/22 Premier League season remaining, Leeds have 97 yellow cards to their name.

That’s the most any team has received since England’s top-flight was reformed back in 1992.

In truth, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Yorkshire outfit pass the 100-mark because these last two matches are going to be very nervy.

The Whites have to get something from their games against Brighton and Brentford, else they are down, but they need favours from elsewhere also.
