Kris Boyd labelled Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney as ‘lazy’ during Scotland’s 2-0 defeat to Denmark in their World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, as he told Sky Sports (01/09/21 at 8:45 pm).
There was a lot of talk as to where Tierney and Andy Robertson were going to play for their country yesterday because Steve Clarke had to travel with limited players to Copenhagen because of COVID issues.
It was Liverpool’s flying fullback that played as a right wing-back and Tierney out on the left.
But the Arsenal man was at fault for the opening goal because it was Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg’s targetted cross-field ball from the left, which was headed home by Daniel Wass.
Tierney allowed his man to run off his shoulder, then he misjudged the flight of the ball and was then beaten all ends up in the air.
Then minutes later, down Tierney’s side again, the Dane’s doubled their lead, as Boyd commented on his defending.
“It’s obviously an area that Denmark have looked at,” said Boyd. “Even if it was Kieran Tierney or Andy Robertson there.
“It’s an area that they have seen as a weakness and you have to say they have exploited it really, really well.
“I think it’s lazy defending from Kieran Tierney, and it’s not like him because he is usually a good defender.
“But maybe because he is in the three and he is tucked in a bit more. When you see the goal, he (Tierney) actually has a look at him (Wass) but I am not sure why he goes in the pitch, he runs inside and it’s a fantastic finish.”
It’s not going well for Tierney this season because the £25 million man (Sky Sports) is having troubles at both club and international level.
Whilst his performances have been steady, he did have trouble against Chelsea recently and once again his defensive positioning was questioned yesterday.
But whilst Scotland and Arsenal look for some much-needed form and confidence, it’s a player like Tierney who they will look towards to get them on the front foot again.
