Speaking on the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has been discussing Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.
Gold was involved in a conversation with Rob Guest about the intensity of Conte’s early sessions at Spurs, and interestingly, Gold says that he was told that Nuno did something similar when he arrived at the club.
Indeed, Gold says that Nuno also tried to get his players to do these intense sessions after matches, but the Portuguese boss’ methods reportedly caused a few injuries.
What’s been said?
Gold was speaking about Conte and Nuno’s methods after Guest spoke about the intense warm-down he saw after the Everton game.
“Yeah, it’s interesting because at the start of Nuno’s reign he was doing something similar, he was pushing them quite hard after matches, but I was told that a couple of little niggling injuries actually came out of that and I do wonder now if it’s going to be one of those double standards where Antonio can do it and that’s fine,” Gold said.

Different narratives
It’s interesting that Gold points out a potential double standard here, and it’s worth noting how narratives can differ between managers.
Gold says that the line that came out of Nuno running intense sessions was the fact that a few players picked up minor injuries during these drills, but when Conte does it, it’s seen as a clever ploy to try and get his players fitter.
Both managers aren’t really doing anything too dissimilar to one another, but the way these sessions will be perceived will certainly be different.
