‘It’s inevitable’: Chris Coleman shares what’s definitely going to happen at Sunderland in January

Sunderland are on the hunt for new additions in the January transfer window.

Chris Coleman has told the Chronicle that it is ‘inevitable’ that Sunderland will face departures in the January transfer window.

Sunderland are currently in 22nd in the Championship table, and are in the thick of a relegation fight.

However, Coleman realises that keeping his current squad together for the whole season is going to be impossible.

And the Welsh boss is already planning to make incoming additions, ahead of the transfer window opening again next month.

He said: “We’ve had a plan in mind. We’re working really along with Neale McDermott, who’s been helping out – he’s been brilliant – we’re looking at different options.

“We’ve spent a lot of hours discussing it to see if we can add a bit of quality to what we’ve got, to help us out.

“It’s inevitable we could lose one or two ourselves so we’ve got make sure we’re pro-active so we don’t get caught short if that does happen.

“It could be an active transfer window. We could do with one or two faces to help us out but time will tell whether that’s the case or not.”

Coleman has sparked an improvement at Sunderland, but there is a realisation that an injection of quality is needed.

The Black Cats are unable to spend their way out of trouble though, as they have a limited budget to work with.

Coleman has already hinted that loans could be crucial for the Wearsiders, as they look to escape the drop.

Sunderland have one more game before the transfer window opens, with their next outing coming against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
