Paul Merson has given his verdict on Chelsea defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo and has noted that he is inferior to Arsenal star Declan Rice.
The former Arsenal star and Sky Sports pundit cannot believe how much Chelsea paid for Caicedo.
So, what has Paul Merson said about Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice of Arsenal? Let’s take a look.
Paul Merson not impressed with Chelsea defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo
Well, Paul Merson has been critical of Chelsea defensive midfielder Moises Caicedo.
The former Arsenal star thought that Caicedo was poor against Liverpool at Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.
Merson has also noted that the 22-year-old Ecuador international defensive midfielder is not worth the transfer fee that Chelsea paid for him.
The Blues paid an initial transfer fee of £100 million plus £15m in performance-related add-ons to Brighton for Caicedo in the summer of 2023 (Sky Sport).
Merson has compared Caicedo to Declan Rice and has said that the Arsenal and England international midfielder is a superior player.
The Sky Sports pundit, though, has backed Chelsea to win against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League this weekend.

Merson told SportsKeeda: “Chelsea were terrible against Liverpool and deservedly lost 4-1. They were absolutely all over the place and went to Anfield without a center forward. As for their midfield, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo cost a combined €225 million, so how does one leave them out even if they underperform?
“Caicedo was signed for €4m by Brighton a few years ago, now suddenly he’s the most expensive player in Premier League history? You can’t improve that much in 2-3 years, it’s impossible.
“You watch Caicedo and compare him to Declan Rice – it’s like chalk and cheese! For that fee, you have to grab games by the scruff of the neck and make your presence felt, and I can’t remember him doing that too many times at Chelsea.
“The Blues’ midfield was absolutely ripped to shreds against Liverpool and it was embarrassing, to say the least. That said, Chelsea’s home form has improved over the past month or so, so I think they’ll win this game 2-1.
“Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Wolves.”
My View: Let us be patient with Moises Caicedo
In my opinion, everyone has to be patient with Moises Caicedo. While I personally do not think that he is worth anywhere neat £100 million, I have to point out that the Chelsea defensive midfielder is only 22 years of age.
It is not Caicedo’s fault that Chelsea thought that it would be a good idea to pay over £100 million for him.
While it is true that the 22-year-old has not been a huge success at Chelsea so far, I must note that the Blues as a team are not doing well.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are not going to even challenge for the Premier League title, and I do not see them ending up in the Premier League top four euther.
Caicedo is only 22 now. Chelsea fans have to be patient with him and give him time.
