Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has delivered a controversial view on Mike Ashley’s ownership at Newcastle and the fans’ complaints.
Ferdinand’s comments certainly won’t go down well with the Magpies’ fanbase, as he’s said that Ashley is the one putting the money up and that if the fans want a change, they should round their money up and buy him out.
“He doesn’t care what people think, it’s his club and he’s doing what he wants to do. Whether you like it or not, he’s the one putting the money up, and he’s doing what he thinks is right for the club. The Geordies don’t like it, a lot of them hate him and don’t like him. Round your money up and take over the club then,” Ferdinand said.
The idea of Newcastle fans rounding their money up and buying the club seems like a good idea, until you realise just how much it costs to purchase and run a Premier League football club these days.
Ferdinand’s comments seem to be a bit tone deaf. The former England star doesn’t seem to realise that Ashley isn’t putting money up, instead recycling the funds generated by the club, while he sits on his fortune seemingly refusing to spend big to improve the squad.
Unfortunately, it seems as though the ex-Manchester United star doesn’t seem to think Ashley is doing too bad of a job, but the reality is a club the size of Newcastle United shouldn’t even be close to the Championship.
