Scottish Premiership powerhouses Rangers let Lee Hodson leave Ibrox this summer before he signed a contract with Gillingham.
If Lee Hodson can’t even hold down a place in the Gillingham team, what chance did he ever have of unseating captain and talisman James Tavernier at Rangers?
The Northern Ireland international will be fondly remembered by some sections of the Ibrox support for a superb performance in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Celtic in 2017. But that was about as good as it got for a player who failed to escape Tavernier’s shadow in Glasgow.
Rangers appeared to have few second thoughts about letting Hodson go when his contract expired on July 1st. Though if the former Watford and MK Dons defender was hoping to rebuild his reputation south of the border, he might be a little disappointed about how things have gone at The Gills so far.
Hodson started Gillingham’s first four games of the League One season but he hasn’t been seen since a 1-0 defeat to Coventry at the end of August.
“We can be a force in this league if we can cut the sloppy errors out,” he told Kent Live after the game.
Gillingham certainly responded from that miserable defeat against the Sky Blues, remaining unbeaten in each of their last four fixtures. But it seems that Hodson has become the fall guy after one poor performance too many.
He was even left out of the squad entirely for recent clashes with Bristol Rovers and Tranmere, though an injury to Barry Fuller opens the door for Hodson to re-establish himself in the starting XI.
It feels like a man who never really established himself at Rangers cannot afford another below-par display.
