Jose Enrique claims that Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is likely to hit more injury problems even when he returns from his latest set-back, on the ITV Football Podcast.

Gomez was ruled out for the season with injury, when he twisted his knee in England training.

The Liverpool defender has been in recovery for some time, and is now building up his strength ahead of making his long-awaited return.

Gomez has been a player who has suffered with injuries throughout his career, and this is his second knee problem.

And Enrique can’t believe Liverpool didn’t spend more in January, as he feels that Gomez can’t be relied upon to stay off the treatment table.

“You think about Gomez, you think about Matip. They are injury prone. Both of them,” he said.

“I played with Gomez, he’s a fantastic guy and a fantastic player. But he gets injuries quite a lot. You are not going to take that from him. It’s going to happen.

“Actually they need a centre-back. Why didn’t they spend in January and try to fight? If they don’t get into the Champions League, I’m not sure what’s going to happen to their squad.”

Liverpool, of course, will do their best to protect Gomez when he does return.

They are likely to have to carefully manage both his and Virgil van Dijk’s minutes next season, when they do make their comebacks.

Liverpool did invest in January, but it was only to complete deals for Ozan Kabak and Ben Davies.

Kabak has actually caught the eye lately, but Davies has found things difficult since his move to Anfield and still hasn’t made his debut.
