Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has told Arsenal’s official website that it’ll be ‘funny’ to come up against Emiliano Martinez today.
The Argentina goalkeeper is set to face Arsenal for the first time since joining Aston Villa in a £20 million move in August.
Martinez was a massive player for the Gunners toward the end of last season, helping Mikel Arteta’s side to an FA Cup title after deputising for the injured Bernd Leno.
But when Arteta indicated that Leno would be keeping the number one shirt, the 28-year-old made the decision to join Aston Villa.
And despite admitting that Martinez knows all of Arsenal’s secrets, Aubameyang is looking forward to facing his former team-mate at the Emirates Stadium today.
He said: “He knows [the secrets], but I’ve got no worries about that. He knows a lot of things, but things can change on the day of the game. Emi is a great keeper and a great guy as well. It’s going to be funny to play against him.
“He sent me a message and said, ‘Hopefully you’re going to get a penalty and I’m going to save it.’ I said, ‘OK, be ready for the chip then!'”
How Martinez would love to keep a clean sheet in North London.
He definitely left Arsenal on good terms with the club and coach, having spent 10 years on their books.
But after learning of Arteta’s plan to put him back on the bench, he’ll certainly be determined to prove a point to the Spaniard today.
