Jurgen Klinsmann has claimed to ESPN FC that Christian Eriksen might’ve made a difference for Tottenham Hotspur in their Carabao Cup final defeat by Manchester City this evening.
Pep Guardiola’s side edged out Tottenham at Wembley to win their first piece of silverware of the season.
It was only 1-0 but really, Spurs, under caretaker boss Ryan Mason following Jose Mourinho’s sacking six days ago, were very poor and never looked like challenging the Premier League champions elect.
Tottenham were battered during a first half that somehow stayed goalless, with Phil Foden hitting the post.
Mason had the likes of Gareth Bale on the bench in terms of game changers, but Lilywhites legend Klinsmann said it’s ‘funny’ that the player who Mason needed the most was at Inter Milan.
Daniel Levy, the North Londoners’ chairman, sold Eriksen to the Italian giants in a £20 million deal 16 months ago.
He told ESPN FC: “It’s funny. We talk about who could come on and make a difference, but the player who could’ve made a difference today is Eriksen but he’s playing for Inter Milan now.”
Would Eriksen have made a difference? Who knows.
Tottenham definitely had a problem when it came to creating chances, and the Denmark international is, after all, a playmaker.
But even when he was in North London, Eriksen wasn’t making a positive difference to Mourinho’s side – or even under Mauricio Pochettino for the Argentine’s last 18 months at the club – so to suggest that he would’ve been the Lilywhites’ saviour is a bit of a stretch.
