Nick Pope has shared that ‘it’s funny’ how goalkeepers are perceived as he was talking to Sky Sports News (07/10/20 at 2:05 pm) about mistakes Everton’s Jordan Pickford has made, as well as his own recent errors.

The Burnley shot-stopper suggested that keepers are unfairly treated because on one hand ‘you play out of your skin’ and then ‘within a second’ you make a mistake and there is a negative reaction about you.

Pope also made mistakes during his side’s defeat to Newcastle, but unlike Pickford, he hasn’t been so error-prone because England’s current number one was at it again over the weekend.

England take on Wales in an international friendly tonight and Pope shared his thoughts on Pickford’s mistakes, his mistakes and he had a simple message.

“As a goalkeeper, it’s funny,” Pope told Sky Sports. “You play out of your skin, outstanding for three weeks and then within a second you have made an incorrect decision or an error and it’s a goal against you.

“That is the way it goes. The last one doesn’t buy you the next one. Your form is only as good as the present moment. It’s consistency, that’s a hard thing to train and something every goalkeeper will look for. Every player as well.”

Gareth Southgate has a big decision to make heading into next summer’s European Championships because on current form Pickford probably doesn’t even get into England’s top three keepers.

The problem is that Pickford’s mistakes are too frequent and they occur from nothing situations.

But whilst at Goodison Park he continues to fumble, for his country and Southgate, he hasn’t let anybody down, so it’s difficult to judge that situation.
