Troy Deeney has fired back at Kieron Dyer’s claims that Newcastle are ‘boring’ to watch whilst speaking to TalkSport Breakfast (26/10/20 at 6:30 am).

The outspoken striker asked what would happen if Newcastle got relegated whilst trying to ‘have a go’ because he feels that Steve Bruce is doing a ‘good job’ and labelled the whole situation as ‘frightening’.

Dyer made his ‘boring’ claims whilst working for a pundit on Sky Sports before Newcastle recorded a late 1-1 draw at Wolves on Sunday.

During his days in the Premier League and in the Championship, Deeney would have come up against Bruce’s side and he backed the Englishman despite criticism.

“So, what he’s[Dyer] saying is let’s have a go, it will be interesting then what happens if they get relegated,” Deeney asked. “He [Bruce] is out of a job. He’s naïve. He’s silly. It’s literally like catch 22. What do you want him to do?

“He has shored it up. He hasn’t had massive amounts of money to spend over the years. He is doing a very good job there and they have got some good players there.

“They have lost two games! You would genuinely think they were bottom of the league and hadn’t got a point yet. I understand what Kieron is talking about because he played for a very exciting team under Mr Robson. Great team. But they had Alan Shearer. They don’t have Alan Shearer, at the moment. There’s no point talking about past times.

He added later on: “Sometimes, it is frightening. It’ better the devil you know, isn’t it? What do people expect? Honestly. In a market place now that’s dominated by money. You have got City and Liverpool, who are miles ahead of everybody else. Chelsea are now trying to play catch up with the amount they have spent.

“Then we are saying ‘we need to get rid of Bruce now because he is guaranteeing that we are going to be in the Premier League’. It sounds to me sometimes if a foreign managers name then it would be ‘oh, what a great job he’s doing’. He’s doing a good job!”

In truth, until Mike Ashley parts ways and sells Newcastle no-one will truly understand just how bad, or dare it to be said, good job he has done in the North East.

Until a fresh face is making orders from the top and implementing their own ambitions through the club then Newcastle won’t be able to move forward, and the manager on the touchline will be in the firing line.

Until then, Newcastle fans will have to deal with having a manager who prefers playing for a clean sheet from the off rather than having a go.
