Ian Wright says Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool signing Arsenal transfer target Cody Gakpo from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven is ‘fantastic’, as he told MatchDay Extra on Premier League Productions (26/12/22 at 11:00 pm).

The Arsenal legend spoke about the ‘unbelievable’ numbers Gakpo has put up and the performances he produced at the recently-concluded 2022 Qatar World Cup for the Netherlands.

For some, this signing has well and truly shocked them, no more so than Liverpool-mad pundit Jose Enrique, who didn’t expect Gakpo to be signed by wantaway owners FSG.

Added to that, the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United were also keen on the 23-year-old, but instead, he is heading to Merseyside in January.

It’s a message of intent from the Reds, who will want to add more faces to their squad, with Wright adding that they are ‘ready to go again’, especially if they sign Jude Bellingham.

“Unbelievable numbers,” said Wright. “For 23, that’s fantastic, you have to say. You can see what Liverpool are trying to do, they are trying to build.

“Gakpo, I thought he was fantastic at the World Cup a lot of people were saying. Then Jude Bellingham was fantastic at the World Cup at 19.

“If that’s where Liverpool are going, then you can see they are getting themselves ready to go again.”

JANUARY TRANSFER WINDOW

Both Liverpool and Arsenal are expected to be busy during the January transfer window, with the duo fighting for very different targets this season in the Premier League.

Not many would have predicted it at the start of the campaign, but the Gunners are seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

That’s an incredible 15 points ahead of Liverpool, who are hovering outside of the Champions League places after 15 matches.
