Paulo Dybala’s long transfer saga has come to an end as the Argentine has joined Roma on a free transfer.
The attacker has long been linked with a move away from Juventus, and now, he’s finally found a new club after his contract with the Turin-based outfit expired.
Of course, on numerous occasions, it looked as though Dybala would be headed to Tottenham Hotspur.
The London club have been linked with Dybala for the last three summers, and while an image rights issue scuppered the deal at the eleventh hour in 2019, it’s now increasingly hard to understand why a move didn’t happen in 2020.
Indeed, according to Fabrizio Romano, a key factor in Dybala joining Roma was Jose Mourinho’s influence, and if that’s true, we have to wonder why the ‘top player’ didn’t end up at Spurs during Mourinho’s time in charge of the club.
Tottenham clearly had an interest in Dybala at the time, they were linked with him almost every other week that summer, and the player clearly would have been open to a move away. After all, he almost left the year before.
With all due respect to Roma, if Mourinho has been able to convince him to join a Europa League-level club in Serie A, he surely would’ve been able to talk him into a move to one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.
Of course, that’s all in the past now and Dybala is now going to work with Mourinho at Roma, but given that the manager has been able to convince the Argentine to take a step down to join him in Rome, we have to wonder if Daniel Levy could’ve done more to get him to north London during his tenure at the club.
The more you think about it, the tougher it is to understand why Dybala never ended up at Spurs.
