Ashley Williams has admitted to BBC’s Football Focus that the rumours regarding Steve Bruce at Newcastle United are ‘crazy’.
Saudi Public Investment Fund completed their takeover at Newcastle on Thursday afternoon.
Now the question is whether Bruce – who was under pressure at St James’s Park even before this happened – will reap the monetary benefits of having such mega-wealthy owners.
The veteran English manager has himself admitted via The Daily Mail that he thinks he may be a goner in the North East, with the same publication linking a number of big names to the role – including Steven Gerrard at Rangers.
The Magpies are home to Tottenham next Sunday in what will be Bruce’s 1,000th game as a professional manager if he lasts.
And Williams isn’t happy with what he’s hearing regarding the 60-year-old coach.
He said: “I think it’s crazy we’re talking about him losing his job so soon after the takeover. It would be nice [to reach his milestone]. He’s been such a great football player and manager in our league for so long. He should get his 1,000th game, definitely. I think they [new owners] obviously got their plan.”
Fair is fair
Bruce, who earns around £230,000 per month in the North East, deserves to remain in charge for a while longer.
Yes, football is a results business and they haven’t been getting the results this season under him, with United languishing 19th in the Premier League table.
But this development will give every facet of Newcastle – including the players – a big lift and it’ll be interesting to see how performances improve, which they will.
