Arsenal pulled off a result that not many people were expecting. The Gunners picked up all three points against the reigning Premier League champions and that gives them some hope of finishing in one of the European places at the end of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side were made to work hard by Liverpool. The Reds took the lead through Sadio Mane but two gifts from Virgil van Dijk and Alisson handed Arsenal the victory.
As delighted as Arsenal will be with the result, the difference in quality between the two sides were overly-evident. Liverpool are miles ahead of the Gunners with respect to the level of players and Arteta certainly noticed that.
Arsenal need to have a good summer transfer window to have a better chance of competing with the top teams. However, their financial situation isn’t the best at the moment which casts a big shadow ahead of the summer window.
Arteta was asked about the impact of the club’s financial problems affecting their transfer plans and the Gunners boss sent a strong message to the board saying that his team needs strengthening.
He said in his post match press conference: “I think it’s clear we need to strengthen the squad.” (Football London, 22:57)

“It (Arsenal’s financial situation) is a big concern. You can see how [Liverpool] build their squad and there is no magic, you need to improve the squad with quality, quality players. And we need a bigger squad to compete in this competition. That is the challenge.” (Sky Sports)
Will Arsenal’s owners invest this summer?
That is a big statement by Arteta ahead of the summer transfer window. The Arsenal boss needs to backed by his board in the market and Gunners supporters will be hoping that their owners respond to the manager’s plea.
A lot will depend on where Arsenal will finish this season. Completely missing out on European competition will make it extremely difficult for the club with respect to transfer funds but if there ever was a time for the owners to inject some cash in, it’s now.
