Darren Bent told talkSPORT (31/08/21 at 9:25 am) that Willian’s actions to rip up his Arsenal contract was ‘class’.

Prior to transfer deadline day, Arsenal confirmed on Twitter that the 33-year-old has agreed to terminate his three-year contract and sign for Corinthians.

It has been suggested by Sky Sports that Willian has given up around £20 million and helped Arsenal save a lot of money.

But whilst Willian has seemingly given up so much money, it’s something that Paul Merson doesn’t believe because he feels he has still been paid, somewhat.

However, former Premier League striker Bent thinks the opposite to Merson and feels not many players would have taken such actions.

“I don’t think it was the worst signing of all time,” said Bent. “It certainly didn’t work. As bad as it was, and it was bad for Arsenal, the fact that he has gone about it with the way he has left the football club.

“I kind of go ‘you know what, fair play to him’. I am telling you now, there aren’t a lot of players who would have done that. Left £20 million on the table.

“So, yes, of course, it didn’t really work and he was brilliant against Fulham on the first game of last season. Other than that, he didn’t offer too much.

“But the way he left Arsenal football club will make fans think ‘it didn’t work out, but fair play to him and I wish him all the best because to do that is massive. It’s class’.”

One thing is for sure, if these rumours are true then Willian has won over a lot of the Arsenal fans.

It’s pretty simple, his transfer to the club didn’t work out and he shouldn’t have left Stamford Bridge for the Emirates in the first place.

It was a risk Mikel Arteta took and one that has backfired.

But all of that will be the last of Arteta’s worry because his team are sitting bottom of the Premier League table after three matches, with zero points and zero goals to their name.
