Liverpool have reportedly identified Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger as a potential signing.

According to EuroSport, Liverpool have asked to be kept in the loop regarding the Germany international’s future.

Rudiger is out of contract at Chelsea next summer and the 28-year-old is looking certain to leave on a Bosman.

Under Tomas Tuchel, Rudiger looks a far better player than he ever did during Frank Lampard’s reign at Stamford Bridge.

And this could be one hell of a bargain for Jurgen Klopp, given that he’s free.

But this is a player who is also prone to moments poor defending of madness on the field, as Roy Keane pointed out this past summer.

‘Childlike’

Rudiger, who earns £100,000 per week in London, incurred the wrath of Keane for his defending against France during the Euros.

Here’s what the Manchester United legend told ITV: “For so many players to be in the wrong position at this level, there’s no excuse. Rudiger should be minding his own business. Why he’s getting drawn into that and chasing people?

“It’s childlike, trying to chase the ball. Really poor goal to concede.”

If criticism from Keane meant you were a bad footballer then let’s face it, half of the Premier League is filled with inept players.

Rudiger isn’t one of those but, as mentioned, his judgement is lacking at times.

And considering the centre-back options that Klopp already has at Liverpool – Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate – perhaps it’s best that the German coach lets somebody else sign Rudiger.

The Anfield club don’t need him.
