Paul Merson now believes that Tottenham have ‘absolutely zilch chance’ of winning the Premier League title this season despite talking about it possibly happening the previous week.

The outspoken TV pundit told Sky Sports via Football Daily that Tottenham’s ‘atrocious’ defending against West Ham last week is a reason for that.

A Jose Mourinho side somehow created history by allowing their London rivals to score three goals in the last 10 minutes to draw 3-3 in a pulsating end to a game last week.

Merson was critical of how they defended on that day and he is now not even giving them a chance of potentially winning the title.

“I thought Tottenham took their foot off the pedal,” Merson said. “The first goal was bad marking. The second goal, the own goal, it just went under the carpet. It’s atrocious defending.

“Then the last goal, Aurier gives away the most pointless free-kick I have ever seen in the history of football on the touchline and no-one’s mentioned, Harry Winks. Why doesn’t he just boot the ball up the pitch? He’s trying to beat a player on the edge of the box.

“I don’t think Tottenham were that great – for about 15 minutes they blew them away – I was really disappointed in Tottenham and the way they let it go. A Mourinho team, we were only talking last week that this team have a chance of winning the league. I see enough in that 10 minutes to think and probably go as far and say ‘absolutely zilch chance’.”

Whilst Tottenham’s forward line provides sleepless nights for opposing fans, their backline is providing sleepless nights for the previously robust and defensively demanding Mourinho.

Throughout his career, even during his days at Manchester United, he was able to lay the foundations for his team to be tough to beat.

But it’s proving to be a little difficult this time around! Although, he is trying to -re-shape the backline and is desperately searching to find his best formula.
