Calum Chambers has waxed-lyrical about the ‘very unique’ Leeds United, after Arsenal knocked them out of the League Cup on Tuesday night, as he told Sky Sports.
The centre-back came off the bench in the second half to open the scoring within ten seconds of coming onto the pitch.
Then Eddie Nketiah, who played for Leeds during a brief loan spell in the Championship, pounced on a mistake from Liam Cooper to just about put his side 2-0 up – although, he nearly did fluff his lines.
But with Leeds struggling in the Premier League, and the Gunners unbeaten in their last seven heading into last night’s game, it was obvious that as soon as that first goal went in, the game was going to go only one way.
But Chambers shared what his manager Mikel Arteta told them at half-time, as the £16 million player (BBC Sport) lauded Leeds United.
“He (Arteta was telling us to just ‘keeping going’ (at half-time) and ‘keep playing the way we want’. Adjust a few things tactically,” said Chambers.
“It’s always going to be tough against Leeds. They are a very unique team in the way they play.
“So, you have got to be on it and you have got to be at it. We knew that going into the game. I think we stood up to the test, came out with a win, so it was a good result, in the end.”
It’s all good Leeds getting praise for the manner in which they play, but they would surely prefer the results, rather than the eye-catching performances.
At this moment in time, they aren’t able to earn those results, and sooner rather than later, things could go from bad to worse.
Leeds face off against rock-bottom Norwich on Sunday – lose against them, then it’s probably going to be a complete and utter meltdown.
But Kalvin Phillips did return to Leeds’ XI last night, which helps their cause in getting more balance into the side and protecting a defence that’s conceding too many chances.
