Rangers sacked Pedro Caixinha after a disastrous spell at Ibrox. How much did Celtic’s dominance play a part?

Pedro Caixinha’s spell in charge of Rangers came to an abrupt end yesterday as the club announced he has been fired.

Caixinha arrived in Glasgow with big ambitions, but he never came close to ending Celtic’s total dominance of Scottish football.

The Portuguese manager was the architect of his own downfall, with suspect signings and poor man management skills, but the spectre of Celtic loomed large.

Everything Rangers are trying to do is haunted by the total superiority of Celtic under Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic have not lost a domestic game since Rodgers took over in 2016, and they are marching relentlessly towards setting a new domestic record number of consecutive title wins.

May be if Celtic had lost a game, just one, there would have been a little belief at Rangers they could catch them up.

Instead every match lost, every game drawn, was Rangers slipping further behind their rivals.

It is a slippery slope they could not escape from, and you sensed it was eating manager Pedro Caixinha up inside.

His attempted rebuild required patience, but he cut a frustrated figure and has struggled to get the best out of his players, publicly criticising them after their League Cup semi-final defeat.

But with Celtic pulling off into the distance, Caixinha got more and more frustrated, and their total dominance has claimed another victim.
