Gary Neville has stated on Twitter that ‘it’s alarming’ how many wide players ‘get stuck in the build up’ of their play after comments from Leeds United’s Daniel James.

The Wales international told the Telegraph that ‘safe is dangerous in the position I play’, as he was reacting to wanting to score more goals and provide more assists.

On transfer deadline day, at the second time of asking, Leeds signed James from Manchester United.

Two-and-a-half years ago, the Whites missed out on his signature right at the death and he ended up staying at Swansea.

But this time around, the transfer happened and it was a logical move from the winger because his game time would have reduced with the depth in quality at Old Trafford now.

Nonetheless, he will no doubt get a footballing lesson from Marcelo Bielsa, who has helped coach, develop and improve a number of stars at Elland Road.

But following James’ comments, Neville made it clear that those on the flanks need to remember that they are there to provide and put the ball into the back of the net.

Neville also posted a similar reaction on his Instagram story and now it’s going to be interesting to see where James can take his game in Yorkshire.

The likes of Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford have become England internationals under Bielsa’s stewardship.

And whilst James is already on the international stage, if he can follow in the footsteps of someone like Phillips, then he will no doubt become one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League.

For opposition teams, the thought of having to face James’ direct style and speed on one flank, and the trickery and quick feet of Raphinha, on the other, is one that will keep many players awake at night.
