Michael Bridge has criticised Tottenham Hotspur for being “architects of their own downfall”.
The Sky Sports journalist told GiveMeSport that Spurs missed out on a great opportunity in the FA Cup.
Barring a miraculous turn of events in the Premier League, Tottenham will finish the season empty-handed.
Spurs were recently knocked out of both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
In the latter, Tottenham went out to Championship side Sheffield United.
‘They threw it away’
Bridge noticed how another trophyless season has “affected the fans”.
He also recalled other times Spurs haven’t exactly helped themselves in cup competitions.
Bridge told GiveMeSport: “Spurs missed a real opportunity going out of the FA Cup.
“It’s affected the fans and even last Saturday, you could feel it against Forest.
“It is not about Tottenham not winning a trophy for 15 years.
“It’s not that easy just to go and win a trophy. But Spurs are the architects of their own downfall at times.
“In FA Cup semis under Pochettino, they played Michel Vorm instead of Lloris.
“In the Champions League final, they didn’t turn up.
“Against Sheffield United, they put Kane on the bench. Why?
“Spurs would have had Blackburn at home in the quarter-final, which would have been televised.
“And the atmosphere would have been really good. They’ve just missed a real opportunity there.
“I’m not saying Spurs would have gone on to have won it, not at all.
“They probably would have lost in the semi-final knowing Spurs, but I just felt like they threw it away.”
Our View
Bridge does have a point. It does feel like Tottenham haven’t helped themselves in cup competitions in recent years.
Surprisingly, he didn’t mention the 2021 League Cup final, with Jose Mourinho sacked just six days earlier.
A good domestic cup run or win might not be the main priority for a big club in the grand scheme of things but it gives fans joy and that’s something Spurs fans haven’t had much of recently.
