Graeme Souness has claimed that it’s a ‘worry’ that Granit Xhaka still hasn’t learnt from his problems at Arsenal, as he told Sky Sports Premier League.
The Sky pundit referenced Granit Xhaka’s days at Borussia Monchengladbach and how he was ‘the most carded player’ during his days in the Bundesliga.
But the Anfield legend thinks that Xhaka, who has been sent off twice this season, hasn’t learnt from those issues in his game.
There is no doubt that the 29-year-old is committed and he doesn’t shy away from the ball, even in pressure situations.
However, for far too long, Xhaka has been prone to do the unnecessary, as Souness spoke about his game.
“He came to this country, from Borussia Monchengladbach, as the most carded player in the Bundesliga,” said Souness.
“I think it’s seven years. Seven sending offs, so he’s not really learnt too much.
“But there is something to like about him. He always wants the ball. He will take the ball in tight areas. He is a good player.
“When you have someone who hasn’t learnt, after all this time, it’s a worry. He fell out with the (Arsenal) crowd big style, it looked like his career was over here. But every manager seems to pick him.”
After a very worrying start to the season for everyone concerned at the club, they have properly picked it up after those opening three defeats.
Mikel Arteta’s side are pushing and are in control of that fourth spot, with Xhaka being used in a more advanced role in the middle of the park.
Perhaps pushing the former captain a little further forward has helped his game because he is then away from the areas where he has a tendency to produce stupid moments.
Either way, his game has improved during these last few months and he has been part of an Arsenal team that deserves to be sitting fourth in the Premier League table.
