Billy Dodds has praised Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos on BBC Sport for his performance at Ibrox at the weekend.

Morelos scored two goals for the Gers in their 3-0 win against St. Mirren at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Former Rangers striker Dodds was impressed with the Colombian, and has praised him.

Competition

Dodds, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, believes that the signing of new strikers in the summer transfer window has made Morelos realise that he needs to step up his game.

Rangers have recently secured the services of strikers Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten in the summer transfer window, meaning that there are now four senior players for that position, including 24-year-old Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

Positive words

Dodds told BBC Sport: “The Morelos of old was back on Sunday. Unselfish, sprightly, sharp, team player. It was an all-round different guy and a much better performance. He had to realise he was at a crossroads. He is not going to get a move, or stay in the Rangers team, playing the way he has been.

“It’s a wake-up call. I think Gerrard has had a word with him and said, ‘Look, you either nosedive and it could affect you getting a move, or you screw the head, because we need you to start performing.’

“The two new signings are chomping at the bit to come in. Morelos didn’t have that competition last year. If he doesn’t perform he’ll be out of the team. What a response it was from him.”

Sir Kenny Dalglish’s verdict on Kemar Roofe

Meanwhile, Sir Kenny Dalglish has written in The Sunday Post that Roofe can be “a real success” at Rangers.

The Celtic legend seems to rate the former Leeds United striker highly, and believes that he will be determined to succeed at Rangers.

Rangers have signed the 27-year-old from Anderlecht in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by The Scottish Sun to be worth £3.5 million.

Dalglish wrote in The Sunday Post: “I like the look of Roofe, and feel he can be a real success. He caught the eye at Oxford United and Leeds United, and there will be a real hunger from him to succeed at Ibrox, and be a part of something special.”

Good signing for Rangers?

Roofe was brilliant during his time at Leeds, and at the age of 27, the former West Brom man is at the top of his game.

Injuries affected the former Oxford United man during his spell at Anderlecht this past season, but when he is up to speed at Rangers, he will be a force to be reckoned with and will make the Ibrox club stronger and more potent in attack.
