It’s a toss of a coin… Michael Owen reacts to Tottenham’s Champions League draw

Tottenham Hotspur have drawn Juventus in the Champions League.

Pundit Michael Owen has told BT Sport that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur have a great chance of beating Juventus in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Tottenham blitzed through their Champions League group despite it’s apparent difficulty, as they dropped just two points across six games against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and APOEL Nicosia.

Meanwhile, Juventus were pitted in a tricky group with Barcelona, Sporting and Olympiacos, and came through with 11 points from six games, qualifying in second place in their group.

Today, Spurs and Juve were drawn against each other in the last 16 of the Champions League, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men drawing one of the more difficult sides available.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men were last year’s losing finalists, as they also were in 2015, with the Italian champions enjoying strong European performances in recent years.

However, with Juve sitting third in the Serie A table, two points behind league leaders Inter Milan, Allegri’s side maybe aren’t the same as they were last year, with no Leonardo Bonucci and an ageing side in many areas.

Now, pundit Michael Owen has told BT Sport that he thinks that Spurs ‘have an outstanding chance’ of beating Juve, as long as they are fit and healthy given that their squad isn’t ‘massive’.

Owen did though add that Tottenham may be tinged with some disappointment given that they drew one of the bigger sides available, but believes Spurs can still beat a ‘mid-range’ Juventus side.

“They’ve got a very, very strong team…a strong starting XI, I don’t think their squad is massive, so as long as they’re fit and healthy before this, then I think it’s a toss of a coin game,” said Owen. “I couldn’t really make anyone favourites, I think Tottenham have got an outstanding chance, and they’ve got players to hurt anyone.”

“The only disappointing thing is that there were so many teams that they could have drawn which would have been easier. However, there’s a couple of teams in there as well that you just don’t want to get, and Juventus aren’t one of those; I think they’re a mid-range team at the moment, and Tottenham shouldn’t be too disappointed. I think they’ve got a fair chance of going through,” he added.
