Stewart Downing has stated that ‘it’s a shame’ Sadio Mane might be leaving Liverpool this summer because the Senegal star is his ‘favourite player’.

Whilst Liverpool are getting ready to announce the arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica, one of their greatest ever players could be heading for the exit door as the Uruguayan arrives.

With 12 months remaining on Mane’s contract at Anfield, something was going to give regarding the £34 million player’s (BBC Sport) future at the club.

Those at Liverpool were hoping he would sign a new deal and try to extend his legacy at the club even further.

But instead, it seems as though he will be heading to Bayern Munich to write a new chapter in his trophy-laden career.

Either way, ex-Reds winger Downing isn’t happy at the prospect of Mane leaving, as he told Sky Sports News.

“Mane, at the minute, it looks like he’s going to leave, doesn’t it?!” said Downing.

“It’s a shame because I love Mane, he’s my favourite Liverpool player and he’s everything Klopp wants in this Liverpool team.

“His pressing, his goals and his assists. He’s a proper team player.”

MORE PRESSURE ON NUNEZ AND DIAZ TO PERFORM

Not just the price-tag, or the fact that he will be playing for Liverpool, but there will be added pressure on Nunez next season.

Mainly because he will be seen as one of the players who has to replace Mane’s goals.

Diaz is another who will face that pressure, and his signing during the January transfer window, has probably helped the Colombian wide man.

It’s allowed him to get a taste of English football, so now it’s a case of turning it on where there is now more expectancy on his shoulders.
