Jose Mourinho has admitted that it’s a shame for Tottenham Hotspur fans to miss Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s debut on Saturday.

The former Southampton midfielder pulled on a Spurs shirt for the first time as Mourinho’s side thumped Ipswich Town 3-0 in the North Londoners’ £1 billion stadium.

Because of the global health crisis, no fans were permitted to watch the game live as Hojbjerg ran the show for the hosts during his 64 minutes on the field.

The Denmark international looked sharp and alert throughout, and made the interception which led to Son Heung-min – who scored twice – making it 2-0 in the first half.

Mourinho told the club’s official website when asked about the Dane’s performance: “It’s a pity. Empty stadium. Even in a friendly, I imagine if this was normal times there’d be a few thousand here.

“I think that’s one of the things that attracted Pierre, playing in this stadium. We miss it [the fans] but I think people can get an idea of what he can do for us.”

The Lilywhites effectively only paid around £3 million for Hojbjerg.

The official fee was £15 million, which is a bargain to begin with, but Tottenham picked up £12 million in selling Kyle Walker-Peters to the Saints.

So, effectively, it’s a £3 million deal and that could go on to look like an astonishingly-good piece of business come next summer.
