Gary Neville told Sky Sports on Super Sunday that ‘it’s a pity’ West Ham supporters haven’t been able to bond with manager David Moyes this season.

The ex-Premier League defender stated that the Hammers have been ‘consistent all season’, but thinks it’s a ‘real shame’ that fans have missed watching them from the stands given that they secured Europa League football.

West Ham fans wouldn’t have thought in their wildest dreams that they would be in such a situation before a ball was kicked this term, but here they are planning for a European tour.

And Neville was full of praise for those in East London and how they have turned things around.

“Consistent all season,” said Neville. “An outstanding performance (v Southampton). They flirted with the Champions League. But you just felt that they would drop out at the last.

“But this is a really good season. It’s a pity the West Ham fans haven’t been able to bond with David Moyes and watched the team this season.

“It hasn’t been what you would typically think of a David Moyes type team. There has been a lot of talent in that team. They play good football. They have a really good spine.

“And that club, to be fair, has been disconnected over the last three years with the stadium and ownership. It’s a real shame the fans have missed this season.”

This is now the chance for those in the East London boardroom to work their magic and win back the trust of the supporters.

It’s Moyes and the players who have got the fans back on board, not those in suits, but backing the Scotsman during the summer transfer window will make the relationship between owners and fans that much better.

Jesse Lingard will, of course, be the hot topic given that he is now set to return to Manchester United and if the Old Trafford club are willing to sell then the Hammers need to make sure he’s back on their books straightaway.
