Paul Scholes told Premier League Productions during their live coverage of Leeds’ draw against Manchester United on Sunday that the home side should have been awarded a penalty in the first half.

The former Manchester United midfielder thinks Luke Shaw handled the ball in the penalty area, with shouts from Leeds turned down and VAR opting against awarding a spot-kick.

Shaw did seemingly look to push his arm out when the ball was put into the box, but his arm wasn’t in an unnatural position and it wasn’t clear and obvious to overturn.

Nonetheless, Scholes felt that a penalty should have been awarded as both Leeds and Man United shared the spoils at Elland Road.

“I think he’s a little bit lucky,” said Scholes. “I know it hits him on the arm and it’s not an unnatural position that’s what I suppose the excuse will be.

“But I think he has plenty of time to get his arm out of the way. If it doesn’t hit his arm then it’s straight into the path of the wide right player who has a chance (to score).

“Even there I do think he sticks his arm out a little bit. I think it’s a penalty.”

After goals galore at Old Trafford during the reverse fixture, many were expecting the same chaos to ensue in Yorkshire.

But it wasn’t meant to be, and in truth, the quality produced by both teams on the day was pretty poor.

Nonetheless, for Leeds, it’s yet another point on the board and another positive result against those teams in Europe.
