Newcastle United look to be on the verge of a takeover.

Newcastle United's Spanish manager Rafael Benitez shouts instructions to his players from the touchline during the English Premier League football match between Burnley and Newcastle...

Pundit Ian Wright has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks it is ‘a necessity’ that Newcastle United keep manager Rafael Benitez when their takeover goes through.

After owner Mike Ashley put the club up for sale earlier this season, Newcastle have been poised for a takeover, and that took another step towards reality this week.

The Amanda Staveley-led PCP Capital Partners have offered £300million for the club according to The Mirror, with a deal hopefully agreed before the end of the year.

That would be a huge boost for manager Rafael Benitez, who was often left frustrated over the summer over a lack of financial backing from Ashley with regards to new signings.

Benitez has still managed to turn Newcastle into a solid Premier League outfit in their first season back in the Premier League, and fans are hopeful that a takeover could bring better fortunes to the club.

The Spaniard has the greatest CV and reputation of any Newcastle manager in recent history, and deserves the chance to build Newcastle back into major players in the Premier League.

Some have wondered what the future may hold for Benitez if the takeover goes through, but pundit Ian Wright has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that it is ‘a necessity’ that the Magpies keep Benitez after the takeover.

Wright added that he feels Newcastle need the money to attract players to the North East, and ultimately feels that anybody signing for the Magpies would come to love the club due to the passion at St. James’ Park.

“Yeah, I think so, because they will need to attract new players and once they get going it is an amazing place to play,” said Wright. “It is a necessity; they have to keep Rafa. They need Rafa, they need the kind of money to attract the kind of player that wants to go to the north-east and sample what they have got going on up there.”

“Once they see the passion, they will stay but they will still probably want to move on after that. To give Rafa the opportunity to be able to compete at that level. If they can sell it, I think it would be brilliant for them up there,” he added.
