Andros Townsend has been speaking to the official Premier League YouTube channel about his former Tottenham teammate Kyle Walker.
The Everton forward heaped praise on the £150,000-a-week Manchester City defender, when asked about the quickest players he’s shared a dressing room with.
What’s the story?
Well, speaking to the Premier League on YouTube, Townsend said: “I’d probably say Kyle Walker, when I was at Spurs. He’s rapid now, and he’s 31 or 32, so imagine what he was like when he was 22, 23, 24. It’s a joke. He’s not lost anything as well.”
In truth, we doubt anybody else sprung to mind for Townsend – Walker is unbelievably fast, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The England international – who Tottenham sold to Manchester City in 2017 – was clocked as the quickest player in the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign.
As the Manchester Evening News show, Walker recorded a top speed of 23.49mph, beating Adama Traore, who finished second with 23.48mph.
Kyle Walker would be thriving at Tottenham
In our view, Walker would be the ideal right-back for Antonio Conte’s wing-back system.
The 31-year-old frequently charges up and down the right flank, and offers a brilliant attacking outlet thanks to his pace and the timing of his runs.
Just imagine a right side of Dejan Kulusevski with Walker overlapping the Swede – Spurs would be too hot to handle.
The England international is unlikely to return anytime soon, so it’s imperative that Conte finds someone similar to him, or Achraf Hakimi, who actioned his plans so effectively at Inter Milan.
In our view, the likes of Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty just aren’t good enough, despite the latter’s improvement in recent weeks.
If Conte can find someone like Walker, then expect Spurs to go up a level next season.
