Airdrie forward Thomas Robert has admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to sign for Scottish Premiership sides Rangers or Celtic, while speaking to the Daily Record.

Airdrie probably knew when Robert arrived in North Lankarshire over the summer that he would not be sticking around for long.

The highly-rated striker has long been a transfer target for the Glasgow giants, while Newcastle United had also shown an interest in the fresh-faced son of Magpies legend Laurent Robert (Chronicle).

The Paris-born 20-year-old certainly caused a stir when he opted to join third-tier Airdrie instead. But, as Robert himself explained, that shock switch to League One was made in an attempt to adapt to life on British shores away from prying eyes.

With the Sun reporting that Celtic, Rangers and a whole host of English clubs are still keen, it is clear to see that a short-term spell at Airdrie has not exactly had an adverse affect on his burgeoning reputation.

“If one day I sign for a big team, it won’t be because of my dad. That’s why I’ve signed here,” said Thomas, who has succeeded in making a name for himself in his own right north of the border.

“The most important thing is first of all to prove myself with Airdrie and after, of course, it’s a dream for me to play with a big team like Celtic, Rangers or in the English Premier League.

“One day I’d like people just to say ‘Thomas Robert’, not the son of the superstar.”

Aidrie’s sporting director Stuart Millar admitted to Not the Old Firm recently that reports linking Robert with a January switch to a club far higher up the footballing pyramid came as ‘no surprise’.
