Paul Merson told Sky Sports that ‘it’s a bit of a joke’ that the Tottenham players might ‘go the other way’ in regards to criticism from Jose Mourinho.
To the surprise of not many, Mourinho has been pretty vocal when Tottenham have underperformed this season.
One standout quote from the former Real Madrid boss, which was widely published, was him saying ‘same coach, different players’ in reference to Tottenham’s inability to hold onto a lead.
But Merson thinks Mourinho’s comments might end up having consequences, such as the players turning on him, which he pointed out, isn’t right.
“You look at Spurs and you worry about them,” said Merson. “I worry because if you are calling the players out like that, I don’t think it’s going to work out.
“The players are going to go the other way, which they shouldn’t because it’s a bit of a joke, but that’s part of it nowadays.”

The bottom line is can Mourinho guide Tottenham to Champions League football and help them achieve success by winning the League Cup?
If he gets over that line then it will shut up a lot of critics who have called him out on a number of occasions this season.
If not then it will be hard to see him walking Tottenham’s touchline next season.
