Keith Downey has reported live on Sky Sports News late last night that Newcastle United still have ‘further hurdles’ to cross before their takeover will officially go through.
Newcastle takeover news
In a dramatic day at St. James’ Park yesterday, Downey was pitched outside Newcastle’s home ground – where he gave some insight into the claims that the Magpies could be bought out.
PIF are believed to be closing in on the purchase of Newcastle from Mike Ashley.
But Downey insists that all is not totally agreed yet, although the deal is getting closer than ever before.
He said: “Welcome to St. James’ Park this evening where this takeover led by Amanda Staveley and backed by the wealth of the Sovereign Wealth Fund of Saudi Arabia is close to being pushed through.
“That is because of developments today in the Saudi state, where they resolved their issues with the broadcaster BeIN Sports.
“It is my understanding that there are further hurdles that are still to be crossed, but it’s a big development in this takeover story.”
Celebrations on ice
After so many near misses in recent years, Newcastle fans could be forgiven for reining in their excitement over the developments until the takeover is officially completed.

However, there has been joy expressed on social media from Newcastle supporters over the news.
Newcastle fans have not been happy with their current ownership for some time, with Mike Ashley coming in for a great deal of criticism.
The hope is that PIF will provide Newcastle with much greater funds to work with, as they hope to reach the upper echelons of the league and compete for trophies once again.
The new owner’s first job may to appoint a new manager, with Steve Bruce widely expected to leave when they do come in.
