‘It’s a big deal’ – Jordan Spieth reveals the ‘weapon’ he’s finally got back after the Genesis Invitational

Jordan Spieth made encouraging progress with his game at the Genesis Invitational this week.

He built on his top 30 finish at last week’s Pebble Beach Pro-Am with an even better result at the Riviera Country Club.

Spieth’s five-under-par final round moved him to within just one stroke of the top 10 at the Genesis.

The 32-year-old has now attributed his impressive performance to the return of a key attribute on the greens.

Jordan Spieth finally regains confidence with the putter

Spieth gained more than three strokes on the field at the Genesis Invitational with his putting, according to Data Golf.

The American’s putting has not been his biggest strength recently, so this should give him a confidence boost ahead of the majors.

Spieth explained that finding his “spot” on the greens is the “weapon” that he has finally regained.

“Yeah, looking at my spot, looking up, looking at the hole… my spot seems to be a weapon that I’ve got back, which is really nice because I feel solid whether it’s breaking or straight, anything in shorter range,” he said in his post-round interview.

“Then that frees you up as you start to expand. So yeah, all three weeks were really good with the putter.

“Cameron had me on a setup adjustment in the couple of days that weren’t frozen in Dallas between Hawaii and Phoenix. There’s definitely some work that went into it. There was a change, and it’s been really good for me.

“I didn’t feel like I stroked it quite as well yesterday and today as I did all last week and the first two rounds. So I’ve got to stay on top of it. It’s a big deal.”

Jordan Spieth looks ahead to Arnold Palmer Invitational

The next event on the PGA Tour is the Cognizant Classic, but Spieth is looking forward to the Arnold Palmer Invitational in a fortnight.

He will be participating via a sponsor exemption, which he would like to avoid for the remainder of the season.

“So yeah, I feel very confident,” Spieth added. “I like the stretch that’s coming up. I’m glad to be going back to Bay Hill and fortunate they gave me a spot.

“I don’t ever want to use an exemption again, and I was hoping not to have to use that one, but I have a good history there, and I feel like I got some momentum.

“And a good weather week in Dallas, which is nice.”
