Premier League outfit Everton are reportedly trying to sign Juventus’ Serie A champion Moise Kean.
It’s easy to forget that Moise Kean only turned 19 in February.
The Juventus wonder kid has exploded onto the scene in the last few months, scoring seven goals in 17 games to fire the Old Lady to her eighth successive Serie A title. He is now arguably Europe’s most promising teenage striker and, according to Calciomercato, Everton made a £26 million bid for his services last week.
But there is a reason why former Juve boss Max Allegri was keen to avoid getting carried away – and there’s a reason too why Everton should not be looking to put all their eggs in a still unproven and unpredictable teenager’s basket.
Kean clearly has a long way to go – not just on the pitch but off it too.
The former Torino kid was expected to be the star of the U21 European Championships on home soil, so no-one imagined that he would start just one of Italy’s three group stage games instead.
Kean was subbed off after an erratic performance against Spain, failed to impress off the bench against Poland and his tournament reached its nadir when he was omitted entirely for the final clash with Belgium.
Italy coach Luigi di Biagio had claimed beforehand that Kean was set to start, but he lost his privileges for an apparent breach of team rules.
“I train a team and there are rules for that team,” Di Biagio told Goal.
“And if someone does do not comply by the rules, not once, but several times, the coach must intervene. Because I am a coach and also an educator.”
In all honesty, the chances of Everton getting their mitts on a teenager with genuine world-class potential looks rather unlikely, with Calciomercato adding that Juventus are expected to tie Kean down to a new deal with his current contract due to expire in 2020.
But even if Juve were willing to cash in on their prized asset, Everton would be taking one hell of a risk asking a 19-year-old to fire them into the top six – even if this particular 19-year-old is a rather special one.
