Tottenham qualified for the Champions League last 16, at Inter Milan’s expense.
Inter Milan gave up a commanding group lead over Tottenham Hotspur to allow the Premier League side to pip them to second in their Champions League group behind Barcelona.
Despite losing to Spurs at Wembley, Inter were favoured to go through.
All they needed to do was beat a PSV side at the San Siro who they defeated in Eindhoven, and hope Tottenham failed to win at Barcelona.
Both teams drew 1-1, meaning Tottenham qualified for the last 16.
Former Italy international Alessandro Costacurta gave his view on why Inter choked at the final hurdle.
He told Sky Italia (via TMW) that he felt Inter’s players were too distracted by the score of the Tottenham game.
Costacurta said: “Inter had to win, if you can not win games like that, you regret it .. It was a game within reach and was set very well.
“Spalletti’s team worried more than what the Tottenham had to do, than to win their own game, but it should be noted that, at Camp Nou, Inter lost against the big names in Barcelona and that the Spurs drew with many champions remained on the bench.”
Barcelona’s weaker team definitely made it easier for Tottenham, but there were still big names like Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele in the starting line-up, and the Spurs goal came while Lionel Messi was on the pitch.
Inter can moan about it, but they have to look at themselves, as if they had won their game, they would be in the last 16.
