Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst should choose Arsenal over Newcastle United if he is on his way to the Premier League this summer, former Gunners coach Andries Jonker has told BILD this weekend.
It is certainly no coincidence that this ravenous Wolves side have been transformed from relegation candidates into Europa League qualifiers since they brought a giant Dutchman to the VFL Arena in 2018.
Not only has Weghorst scored goals for fun in Germany, he has that all-too rare knack of inspiring his team-mates like a budget Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
And, after hitting 20 goals in 42 games this season, the former AZ Alkmaar and Heracles targetman has emerged as a £32 million target for a pair of Premier League clubs (BILD).
But while Jonker is certainly a little biased given his ties with a London giant, he feels that, from a sporting perspective, Weghorst has an easy decision to make when asked to choose from two of England’s best-supported teams.
“I could imagine Weghorst at Arsenal. He could help as a worker and a reliable goal scorer. It would go well (for him) in London,” says Jonker, who believes the late-blooming 27-year-old would only join Newcastle for monetary reasons.

“Joining Arsenal matters more than many other clubs. Weghorst could certainly increase his standing in the Dutch national team.
“(A move to Newcastle) would certainly only pay off financially.”
Jonker’s comments, of course, are reliant upon that Saudi takeover finally going through at St James’ Park.
As long as Mike Ashley remains at the helm, Newcastle will be unable to offer European football, the chance to fight for trophies or those massive wages.
Advantage Arsenal for now, then.
