Simon Jordan has admitted that he would find it funny if Newcastle United were relegated from the Premier League.
Staying in the division is looking like a monstrous task for Eddie Howe on Tyneside.
Newcastle lost 3-1 away to Liverpool on Thursday night to find themselves still 19th in the Premier League and three points adrift of safety.
But 17th-placed Watford have a game in hand over the Magpies and therefore the deficit is potentially six points.
With one victory in 17 Premier League games, Newcastle have been abysmal this season and even under new manager Howe, thing haven’t changed all that much.
In October, Saudi Public Investment Fund completed a £300 million takeover at St James’s Park, ousting Mike Ashley.
Their new majority shareholders have a net fortune of some £320 billion – and Jordan, speaking on talkSPORT, believes that it would be the opposite of a ‘tragedy’ if United slip down into the Championship.
The businessman-turned-pundit said: “People say it’s an absolute tragedy if Newcastle get relegated. It’s not a tragedy – it’s funny! Not in the long game because I like Newcastle fans and I want them to be successful.”
Are Newcastle getting relegated?
Well, that’s up for debate but at the moment, it’s looking distinctly possible.
However, as mentioned, Newcastle have football’s wealthiest owners and with the January window opening in a couple of weeks, the Magpies have a massive advantage over their relegation rivals.
The former Bournemouth manager won’t have a blank cheque and free reign to sign whoever he wants, but he will have the power to shape the United squad in his image for the second half of the campaign.
